Hello friends, I’m Soph – and I’m a stem cell biologist, science communicator & digital comms creator.
I have always loved the idea of being a writer. Soph talks science started as my little corner of the internet where I could flex my creative muscles and combine it with my love for all things science. Over the years, it has given a shy graduate a much needed confidence boost who has grown into an award-winning science blogger and digital creator & has introduced me to people and opportunities I could only have dreamt of.
After 4 years of research and earning my PhD researching how glucose and oxygen help stem cells to keep their identity, I left the lab behind. I realised that it wasn’t just the learning about awesome new discoveries that I was passionate about, but being creative with science and telling the stories of science and scientists. It was one moment half way through my PhD that opened my eyes to this whole exciting career possibility – and since then I have thrown myself into this world and never looked back! In addition to my doctoral research, I have been lucky to collaborate with brands such as Mattel, STEMettes, Merck & New Scientist Live, have my work featured in How It Works magazine and on Cell Press, as well as be featured in The Sunday Times Style & Forbes amongst many more.
Soph talk science is unfortunately not my full time job – yet! It is still a side hustle that I am always distracted by. After finding my feet in this world of science communication alongside the final years of my PhD, it was clear to me that this was my calling to combine my passion for science with a creative flair. But currently, by day I work as a science communicator for a medical research institute in London, UK where I create all varieties of digital media to share the latest research news, as well as events and projects to engage different audiences with medical research too.
I truly believe in the power of science to inspire, educate and entertain, and I follow the motto:
‘Science is not finished until it is communicated’
I’m incredibly passionate about teaching and inspiring people to get involved in science or at least understand a bit more about what they read in the media so you, the public, can make informed opinions of your own. I think that scientists often neglect the importance of engaging with the public and communicating their research clearly and concisely, so I would LOVE this blog to showcase science, scientists and to spread public awareness on stem cell research and much, much more!
Science surrounds every single one of us in our daily lives, but yet so many of us can find it unrelatable and intimidating. It is the mission of Soph talks science to make science more inclusive, recognisable and accessible to everyone. I love to do this personally as a frequently requested speaker or event host. Or through social media where I was one of the leaders in the UK to use platforms such as Instagram to increase the reach of the educational posts I share.
I am also passionate about supporting PhD students in STEM and more senior researchers to embed communication & engagement as part of being a research. I have delivered science communication, personal branding, social media for scientist workshops and more, as well as providing one-to-one consulting on video & other digital media projects to support researchers gain the skills they need to share their latest research.
In short, I’m all about empowering everyone to be more curious about science, to ask questions & to share the latest information in engaging & accessible ways. Because science is for everyone!

My brand values
I always have & always will love to learn new things, & am passionate about education. My passion for this, inspiring others & everyone having access to education & information drives me & my brand.
Being able to show that I am a scientist but also just a human who loves things that I do & that I can make mistakes too is really important to me. I want to help instill a trust in scientists from the public.
‘Creativity is intelligence having fun’ – Albert Einstein
One of the things I love about my career in science communication is that I am able to bring my creative side to science, which often isn’t seen as fun. I love getting the chance to develop things that are entertaining and fun.
I aspire to have a platform that guides any audience I have to discover, question and explore anything they are interested in and passionate about. But also to leave them with feelings of wonder and awe and wanting to know more.
I am a scientist, and an expert. I need to ensure that I communicate value & quality, but also credibility & truth. I want to empower others to know they can be a scientist too, but also ensure that anything I provide is accessible and affordable to all.
